The Serdica Amphitheater (2004 - 2006, 2009, 2010)

The site is located some 250 m to the east, outside the fortress walls of Serdica, between 2-4, Budapeshta Blvd (East) and 12, Dondoukov Blvd (West). It operated during two separate periods:

A theater was originally built on this spot, which operated in the period: end of 2nd/beginning of the 3rd century – third quarter of the 3rd century CE.

Later an amphitheater was built on the same spot.It was a solid two-storey building with oval-elliptical layout and a longitudinal East-West axis.Overall dimensions: approx.103 by 86 m, size of the arena: approx.61 by 44 m. A horizontal path (diazoma) divided the two floors with seats set up in sectors (cuneus). The arched passageways (vomitoriua) were used to enter and exit the amphitheater in East-West direction. The eastern end of the amphitheater has been preserved in the basement of the Arena di Serdica Hotel.Dating: first quarter of the 4th century – end of the 6th century CE.
